  Birth Notes:

Joseph was probably born in either Alabama or Georgia. The 4 census records for him give Georgia twice and Alabama twice. His parents were living in Randolph County, Alabama in the 1840 and 1860 censuses but haven't been located in the 1850 census. In 1860 when he was 13 years old he was listed in his parents' household as born in Alabama. Several of his siblings born before him were also listed as born in Alabama while several born after him were listed as born in Georgia.

  More Information:

• 1860 United States Federal Census, William W. Lanier household, Rock Mills, Randolph County, Alabama: Joseph was living with his parents. He was listed as Joseph Lanier, age 13, born in Alabama. [His middle initial is unreadable.] 3635

• 1870 United States Federal Census, J. S. Lanier household, Chambers County, Alabama: Joseph, Nancy and their daughter, Lula were living in Beat #1. He was listed as a farm hand, age 22, born in Georgia, unable to read or write. 3636

• 1880 United States Federal Census, Joseph Lanier household, Rock Mills, Randolph County, Alabama: Joseph, Nancy and their five children (Lula, Will, Emma, Jeff and Hettie) were living in Beat #11. Joseph was listed as a farmer, age 32, born in Georgia. It was noted in the 1870 census that he could not read or write but this record indicates that he could. 1526

• Notes: According to various newspaper accounts, the Lanier family moved to Mississippi in 1896 or 1897. There are records and newspaper accounts showing they were still in Chambers County, Alabama as late as June, 1897 so they almost certainly didn't move until after that date. They were definitely in Monroe County prior to Nov 1898 when daughter Hettie married Sloke White.

• Occupation: Joseph worked as a farmer & paddle maker. 3637 Census records show he was a farmer but descendants of his daughter, Sallie, were told he was also a paddle maker and traveled around making paddles for mills and boats.

• 1900 United States Federal Census, Joseph Lanier household, Muldon, Monroe County, Mississippi: Joseph and Nancy were living on Dr. W. W. Watkins' plantation where he was a tenant farmer. They listed children Lula, Will, Emma, Jeff, Hettie, George, Fred, James, Lilly and Sallie as living with them along with Nancy's sister, Mattie Bennett. Will, Jeff and Hettie were definitely not living in their household and it's possible that Lula and Emma were not living there either.

Joseph was listed as a farmer, age 53, born Dec 1846 in Alabama, married 30 years. It was noted that he could read and write. 1524
