  General Notes:

Contrary to information in some sources, Matt died at a young age (between approximately 19 - 21). He was likely never married and had no children.

"Howards in Southeastern Kentucky" lists 2 marriages for Madison Howard (son of John Covey & Mary Morris Howard). 1st to Elizabeth Howard (d/o Hiram Brock Howard & Alice Jennings) and 2nd to Matilda Helton. This is incorrect.

1900 Census in Harlan County, Kentucky shows a Matison Howard with wife Matilda and 5 children. In 1910, that family had moved to Rockcastle County, Kentucky. The 1910 record shows Matt & Tilda Howard and most of the children from the 1900 census record in Rockcastle County. The 1920 record also shows Matt and 3 of the children living in Rockcastle County. The Rockcastle County Cemetery Book lists a Howard Cemetery on Chestnut Ridge with only 2 headstones - Matilda Howard (1868-1915) and Matt Howard (1869-1954). This Matt Howard could not be found in the Kentucky Death Index for 1954 so it's not possible to identify his parents.

Lucinda Howard Hopkins and her family were also living in Rockcastle County in 1910 & 1920. Lucinda named one of her sons Henry Madison (after her brothers Henry & Madison). Lucinda would come to Rockcastle County in the early 1950's and have her granddaughter take her to visit a granddaughter of her oldest half sister. If the Matt Howard who was married to Matilda had been Lucinda's brother (especially one she named a son after) she would likely have talked about him to her family and have visited him. In addition, this Matt and Hiram Howard were half brothers which would have made him Elizabeth's uncle if he was the Matt Howard that she married.

Emma Taylor Hopkins (daughter in law of Lucinda Howard Hopkins) didn't list any wives or children for Matt Howard. Census records in 1900 & 1910 for Mary "Pap" Howard shows she only had 3 children living in both 1900 & 1910. It is definite that Lucinda, Sarah and Henry were living in 1900 & 1910.

Madison was living as of 2 Mar 1889 as he is listed in a Harlan County deed where John Covey & Mary Howard deeded some property to their children Henry Howard, Sarah Brock, Lucinda Hopkins, Madison Howard and grandchildren Elijah & Mintie Howard (heirs of Idress). In another deed dated 14 Feb 1891, John & Mary sold Madison's "intrust 1/5" of that property to Henry & Berry Howard. This seems to indicate that their son, Madison, died between 2 Mar 1889 and 14 Feb 1891 and left no heirs. Therefore, he was not the same Madison Howard who married Elizabeth Howard and Matilda Helton.
