General Notes: Stephen Hopkins Jr. was married twice. His first wife & mother of all his children, Rachel, died sometime between 1870 & 1880. He married Barbary Saylor 1 Nov 1880. More Information: • 1830 United States Federal Census, Stephen Hopkins Jr. household, Claiborne County, Tennessee: Stephen's household consisted of 1 male < 5 [George], 1 male 20-30 [Stephen], 2 females < 5 [Nancy & Rebecca] and 1 female 20-30 [Rachel]. 2045 • 1840 United States Federal Census, Stephen Hopkins Sr. household, Claiborne County, Tennessee: Stephen's household consisted of 1 male < 5 [John], 1 male 10-15 [George], 1 male 30-40 [Stephen], 1 female < 5 [], 3 females 5-10 [], 2 females 10-15 [] and 1 female 30-40 [Rachel]. • 1850 United States Federal Census, Stevin Hopkins household, Hancock County, Tennessee: Stevin and Rachel were living with children Betsey, Mary, Catherine, Sally, Eliza, John, Martha and Calvinia. 2008 • 1860 United States Federal Census, Stephen Hopkins household, Hancock County, Tennessee: Stephen and Rachel were living with their children, Betsey, Eliza, John, Martha, Calvina and Serena; their grandchildren, George [son of Elizabeth] and William Columbus [son of Eliza]; a hireling named Samuel Vernier and another child, Mary Hopkins (age 11) who was also probably a grandchild. Stephen was listed as age 56. 2033 • 1870 United States Federal Census, Stephen Hopkins household, Harlan County, Kentucky: Stephen and Rachel were living with children, Betsey, Cerena and Martha; grandchildren, George, William Columbus, James Arton, William Stephen, James M. and James Landan. [George was Elizabeth's son, Wm. Columbus and James Arton were Eliza's sons, William Stephen and James Landan were John's sons. It is unclear who James M. was but most likely it was George McHenry who was also John's son and he was incorrectly listed as James M. instead of George M. William Stephen, George McHenry and James Landon were also listed in Lee County, Virginia with their mother. In yet another census error, their mother was listed twice in Lee County. The boys were listed with her in one record but were not listed with her in the second record.] 2034 • 1880 United States Federal Census, Stephen Hopkins household, Harlan County, Kentucky: Stephen was living with his daughter, Betsey, and her son, George. He was listed as head of household, age 75. 2047 • Probate: The settlement of Stephen Hopkins' estate was recorded in Harlan County Court Records on 13 Apr 1891. Much of the record is unreadable but information that is readable is as follows: S. W. Saylor was the executor. [Silas W. Saylor lived near Stephen and was married to his daughter, Calvina according to both the 1870 & 1880 Census and is likely this S. W. Saylor.] $2.50 was paid to W. C. Hopkins [probably his grandson, William Columbus], $12.27 was paid to Skidmore Unthank, $5.00 was paid to John Saylor. $97.60 was paid to Barbry Hopkins, widow of deceased. Stephen married Rachel McFARLAND ca 1822.2039 (Rachel McFARLAND was born ca 1808 in Tennessee,2008,2041 died bet. 1870 and 1880 in Jerry Branch, Molus, Harlan County, Kentucky 2049 and was buried in Jerry Branch, Molus, Harlan County, Kentucky 2041.)
• Residence: 1830 - abt. 1865, Mulberry Gap, Hancock County, Tennessee. Based on Census records, Stephen and his family were living in Claiborne County, Tennessee in 1830 & 1840. In 1850 & 1860, they were living in Mulberry Gap in Hancock County. Hancock County was created in 1844 from Claiborne and Hawkins Counties so they were likely living in Mulberry Gap all that time and the county name just changed. The Hancock County Courthouse burned in 1885 and again in 1930 so very few records prior to 1930 exist. • Residence: ca 1865, Harlan County, Kentucky. Stephen and Rachel moved their family to Harlan County sometime after 1861 and no later than 1865 as their daughter, Calvina, was married in Harlan County in 1865. • Extra Fact: Stephen & Rachael Hopkins raised several of their grandchildren, including daughter, Eliza's sons, William Columbus and James Arton. Stephen next married Barbary SAYLOR on 1 November 1880 in Harlan County, Kentucky.2040 |
